Author Guidelines

1. TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS

SYNERIS welcomes original and scholarly contributions that advance interdisciplinary dialogue across the full spectrum of the social sciences, including sociology, psychology, political science, economics, anthropology, education, communication studies, law, history, philosophy, social policy, human geography, international relations, criminology, demography, gender studies, cultural studies, and related fields.

The journal considers the following types of manuscripts:

Interdisciplinary Research Articles
Original empirical or theoretical research that bridges at least two distinct social science disciplines, presenting novel findings and making a substantive contribution to the relevant fields.

Theoretical Essays and Reviews
Comprehensive and critical reviews of established and emerging literature, or original theoretical frameworks that synthesize existing knowledge and propose new research directions within the social sciences.

Hypothesis and Theory
Articles proposing new hypotheses, theoretical frameworks, conceptual models, or interpretations that may stimulate further interdisciplinary research and debate in the social sciences.

Methodological Notes
Short communications introducing innovative or emerging research methods (e.g., mixed-methods, digital ethnography, computational social science, big data analytics, cross-cultural validation techniques) applicable across the social sciences.

Commentaries
Critical or scholarly commentaries on previously published articles, significant developments, theoretical debates, or emerging issues within the journal's scope.

Book Reviews
Critical evaluations of recently published scholarly books (within the last 2 years) relevant to any field of the social sciences.

Letters to the Editor
Concise scholarly communications addressing issues related to articles published in the journal, methodological or theoretical matters, or topics of significant interest to the journal's readership.

2. PREPARATION OF ARTICLES

Authors are strongly encouraged to carefully follow the guidelines outlined in this document. Adherence to these guidelines will enhance the clarity, coherence, and academic quality of submissions and is essential for maintaining the standards of the journal.

All articles submitted to this journal must be prepared using the template provided below. Articles not using this template will not be accepted for the review stage. Please also use this template file when uploading your manuscript to the online submission system.

Important Notes

Articles should be comprehensive, fully documented reports of original research. They should be concise but with complete results and conclusions. Authors are encouraged to take advantage of web features available (including data visualizations, interactive maps, or supplementary appendices).

Manuscripts should be divided into the following sections: Title page, Abstract, Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Findings/Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgments, References.

3. ARTICLE SECTIONS

Article Title

The title should clearly and concisely reflect the content of the article. Titles are very important for current awareness and information retrieval and therefore should be carefully constructed for these purposes.

Names and Addresses

For multiple-authored articles, list the names and affiliations of all the authors, the email address(es), and the full postal addresses, using identifiers to link an author with an address where necessary. All authors must provide their ORCID iD.

Abstract

Articles have an abstract, separate from the text, that should not contain any references, numbers, abbreviations, or acronyms unless absolutely necessary.

  • For empirical research articles: The abstract should be structured with the following subheadings: Background / Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusion.

  • For theoretical essays and review articles: The abstract should be unstructured, summarizing the main argument, scope, and contribution.

The abstract should give readers concise information about the content of the article. When preparing their abstracts, authors should keep in mind that this summary is aimed at an interdisciplinary audience which includes readers outside of their field. The abstract is the most important section of the paper since it will be widely and freely disseminated by scientific indexing systems and will be read far more often than the whole paper.

Keywords

All authors are required to provide keywords characterizing the topic of their article. Immediately after the abstract, provide keywords using American spelling and avoiding general and plural terms and multiple concepts (avoid, for example, 'and', 'of'). Be sparing with abbreviations: only abbreviations firmly established in the field may be eligible. These keywords will be used for indexing purposes.

Introduction

The introduction should include a statement explaining the motivation for the research and should accurately place the investigations in context with previous or current work in the field. Clearly state the research problem, research questions/hypotheses, and the significance of the study.

Literature Review

Provide a critical review of relevant theoretical and empirical literature. Identify gaps that your study addresses. This section should demonstrate your command of the relevant interdisciplinary literature and justify your contribution.

Methodology

This section provides a clear, unambiguous description of research design, participants/sample, data collection instruments/procedures, and data analysis techniques in sufficient detail to permit reproduction of the work. Include ethical considerations (informed consent, anonymity, institutional review board approval).

Findings / Results

Present your findings clearly and objectively. Use tables and figures to supplement the text, but do not repeat all data in both formats. Do not interpret or discuss the results in this section.

Discussion

Interpret your findings in light of the theoretical framework and existing literature. Discuss the implications, limitations, and significance of your study.

Conclusion and Outlook

This last section should outline succinctly the results, present possible important applications of the work, suggestions for future research studies, and reflections on new challenges for the subject.

4. REFERENCES – AUTHOR-DATE STYLE

SYNERIS uses the author-date citation system (similar to APA/Harvard style). This system uses in-text citations consisting of the author's surname and the year of publication in parentheses.

In-Text Citations

  • Single author: (Smith, 2020)

  • Two authors: (Smith & Jones, 2020)

  • Three or more authors: (Smith et al., 2020)

  • Multiple citations: Order alphabetically and separate with semicolons: (Brown, 2019; Smith & Jones, 2020; Williams, 2018)

  • Multiple works by same author in same year: Use letters to distinguish: (Smith, 2020a, 2020b)

  • Direct quotation: Include page number: (Smith, 2020, p. 45)

Reference List

  • Order: Alphabetical by the first author's surname.

  • Format: List only the references that are actually cited in the text. Do not include a separate bibliography.

  • Authors: List all authors up to 20. For more than 20, list the first 19 followed by "..." and then the last author.

  • Journal Title: Full journal name (do not abbreviate).

Web References

As a minimum, the full URL should be given and the date when the reference was last accessed. Any further information, if known (DOI, author names, dates, reference to a source publication, etc.) should also be given.

5. MATHEMATICS, SYMBOLS, AND TABLES

Mathematics and Symbols

If your article contains superscripts or subscripts, take special care to ensure that the positioning of the characters is unambiguous. If special symbols are needed (e.g., Greek characters, accented characters, or mathematical symbols), these should be typed using the appropriate TrueType font. Equations must be prepared using Equation Editor or MathType.

Tables

  • Tables must be editable (do not embed them as images).

  • Number tables consecutively in the order they are cited in the text (Table 1, Table 2, etc.).

  • Provide a concise, descriptive title above each table.

  • Use horizontal lines only; avoid vertical lines or complex borders.

  • Include clear column headings and, if necessary, footnotes to explain abbreviations or statistical notations.

Figures

  • Figures include charts, graphs, maps, photographs, and diagrams. In social science writing, illustrative materials should be included only when they are strictly necessary for clarifying the discussion.

  • Submit figures as high-resolution files: minimum 300 dpi for photographs and 600 dpi for line art.

  • Acceptable file formats: .jpeg, .tiff, .eps, or .pdf.

  • Number figures consecutively (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.).

  • Provide a brief but clear caption below each figure.

  • If reproducing copyrighted material, authors are responsible for obtaining written permission from the copyright holder.

6. PROOFS

Proofs of articles are usually sent to you for correction by e-mail as an annotated Microsoft Word *.doc or *.docx file attachment. When checking your proofs, you should take particular care checking mathematics, tables, and references. Only essential corrections should be made.

7. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND FUNDING

Acknowledgements

All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in the Acknowledgements section.

Funding

All sources of funding must be disclosed at the end of the main text under a separate heading Funding.

8. SPECIFIC GUIDELINES FOR MANUSCRIPT TYPES

Interdisciplinary Research Articles
This is the main section of the journal. Original empirical or theoretical research that integrates at least two social science disciplines.

Theoretical Essays and Reviews
Comprehensive critical literature reviews, meta-analyses, or original theoretical frameworks offering new perspectives on significant social science debates. Rather than a 'collage' of detailed information with a complete literature survey, a critically selected treatment of the material is desired; unsolved problems and possible developments should also be discussed.

Hypothesis and Theory
Articles proposing new hypotheses, theoretical frameworks, conceptual models, or interpretations. A hypothesis is a fresh, unchallenged idea that a scientist proposes prior to conducting research. A theory, on the other hand, is a substantiated explanation for an occurrence.

Methodological Notes
Short communications introducing innovative or emerging research methods applicable across the social sciences.

Commentaries
Critical or scholarly commentaries on previously published articles, significant developments, theoretical debates, or emerging issues within the journal's scope.

Book Reviews
Critical evaluations of recently published scholarly books (within the last 2 years). Reviews should include specification of the publisher, author, number of pages, date of publication, and price as appropriate.

Letters to the Editor
Concise scholarly communications addressing issues related to articles published in the journal, methodological or theoretical matters, or topics of significant interest.

9. REFEREEING PROCESS

SYNERIS employs a double-anonymized peer review process. All contributions that are selected for peer review are sent to at least two independent reviewers with expertise in the relevant social science fields.

Anonymization Requirements:

  • Do NOT include the author's name, affiliation, or acknowledgment section in the main manuscript file.

  • Remove author-identifying information from the document properties (File > Info > Check for Issues > Inspect Document).

  • Self-citations: Cite your own previous work in the third person and without revealing authorship (e.g., "As previously demonstrated (Smith, 2020)").

10. ARTICLE PROCESSING CHARGES (APC)

SYNERIS charges Article Processing Charges (APC) but does not charge submission fees.

This policy benefits authors, as payments are only required once a manuscript has been accepted for publication. Book reviews, commentaries, and invited articles are fully exempt from APCs. In addition, APCs are not charged for articles authored by members of the editorial board. To support the costs of maintaining the publication infrastructure, managing the journal, and overseeing the peer-review and editorial processes, an APC is charged upon acceptance of a manuscript. Authors continue to hold full copyright to their work with no restrictions. By submitting to SYNERIS, authors grant the journal the right of first publication. However, the final published version of the article is made available to the public under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0). This means that authors retain ownership of their work while allowing others to share and adapt it for non-commercial purposes, provided proper attribution is given.

Creative Commons License

All articles published in SYNERIS are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0). This license allows others to share, copy, distribute, and transmit the work, as well as to remix, transform, and build upon the work for non-commercial purposes, as long as they credit the original authors and the journal as the original publisher. The license ensures that research is freely accessible to anyone with internet access, maximizing dissemination and impact. It is consistent with the Budapest Open Access Initiative definition of open access and is designed to support the global exchange of knowledge.

Author Rights and Reuse

Under this policy, authors may publish the final published version of their article in any repository, on any website, or in any other platform, provided that a complete citation to the original publication in SYNERIS is given. Authors may also distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon their work for non-commercial purposes, as long as they credit SYNERIS as the original publisher. Authors retain the right to be properly acknowledged and cited, and to control the integrity of their work.

Commercial Use

The CC BY-NC 4.0 license does not permit commercial use of the published material without explicit permission from the authors and the journal. Commercial use includes, but is not limited to, selling the work, using it in advertising, or incorporating it into commercial products. Author's Confirmation

Before their submission is complete, authors will be required to confirm that they agree with the copyright notice. This confirmation is a mandatory step in the submission process. Authors also confirm that they have the authority to grant the rights described in this notice and that the submission does not infringe on any third-party rights.

Responsibilities of Authors

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their work is original, does not infringe on any copyright, and complies with all applicable laws. Authors must also ensure that they have obtained permission to use any third-party material included in their manuscript, such as figures, tables, or text excerpts. Information associated with manuscripts under review is treated as confidential.

Editors and reviewers are expected to maintain the confidentiality of unpublished manuscripts and must not use unpublished information obtained through the editorial or peer-review process for personal, professional, or financial advantage.

The journal's peer-review procedures are governed by its Publication Ethics and Editorial Policies.

Personal information relating to authors and reviewers will not be disclosed unnecessarily to individuals outside the editorial and publishing processes.

Unsubscribing from optional communications does not prevent the journal from sending essential correspondence relating to manuscripts, peer review, editorial decisions, or account administration.

SYNERIS takes reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, loss, misuse, or destruction.

Access to personal information is limited to individuals who require such information to perform legitimate editorial, publishing, administrative, technical, or legal functions.

Although reasonable safeguards are implemented, no internet-based system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Users should therefore exercise appropriate caution when transmitting information online.

12. Data Retention

Personal information is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, to maintain the scholarly record, to operate the journal, or to comply with applicable legal, regulatory, accounting, or archival requirements.

Where no specific retention period is prescribed, information will be retained only for the period necessary to fulfil the relevant legitimate purpose.

Certain information associated with published scholarly articles may be retained permanently or for extended periods because preservation of the scholarly record is an essential function of academic publishing.

13. Disclosure of Personal Information

SYNERIS does not sell personal information or disclose it to unrelated third parties for commercial purposes.

Personal information may be disclosed when necessary to:

  • provide journal and publishing services;
  • operate the online submission and peer-review system;
  • provide technical or hosting services;
  • support indexing, archiving, and scholarly dissemination;
  • protect the security and integrity of the journal;
  • investigate suspected publication misconduct;
  • comply with legal obligations or valid legal requests.

Where external service providers process personal information on behalf of the journal, appropriate safeguards will be applied to the extent reasonably possible.

14. International Data Transfers

Because SYNERIS operates within an international scholarly publishing environment, personal information may be processed or stored in jurisdictions outside the country in which a user is located.

Where international transfers occur, the journal seeks to apply appropriate safeguards consistent with applicable data-protection requirements.

15. User Rights

Subject to applicable law, individuals may have rights concerning their personal information, including the right to:

  • request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information;
  • request deletion where legally applicable;
  • object to or restrict certain processing activities;
  • withdraw consent where processing is based on consent;
  • request information concerning the processing of their personal information.

Requests concerning personal information should be submitted to the journal using the contact information provided below. Certain requests may be subject to legal, contractual, editorial, or archival limitations.

16. Children's Privacy

SYNERIS is an academic scholarly publication and is not directed toward children. The journal does not knowingly seek to collect personal information from children through its website or submission system.

17. Changes to This Policy

SYNERIS may periodically revise this Privacy and Data Protection Policy to reflect changes in publishing practices, website functionality, technology, legal requirements, or data-protection standards.

Any revised version will be published on this page with an updated revision date.
